          In previous articles on this blog we have shared our experience regarding the use of storytelling asone of the most powerful leadership tools available to modern leaders. It’s really no surprise, sinceleaders throughout the ages have used personal stories, parable and anecdotes effectively toensure that listeners could easily absorb and integrate information, knowledge, values andstrategies.

          Beyond merely understanding the power of stories, however, there remains the need for specificaction and commitment to become a storyteller. I hear people say: “Sure, I can see your pointabout telling stories…but do I really need to make the effort to become a storyteller myself? Itdoesn’t seem to come naturally to me.” My answer is always something like: “Yes, I understand.And there was also a time when walking, reading and writing, typing and using a computerprogram seemed unnatural. But when you clearly understood ‘why’ learning these skills was worththe time, you simply got busy and did it. Right?”

          So in this article I want to remind readers of the compelling reasons why it is worth your time tobecome an effective storyteller, in the hopes that more managers and leaders will just get busylearning to tell stories instead of just spewing out information, directives and platitudes. Here aresome of the many reasons why it is so worth it for you to decide, today, to become a greatstoryteller in 2015 and for the rest of your life:

          One day, a colt carried a bag of wheat to the mill.

          As he was running with the bag on his back, he came to a small river. Water went gurgling on. The colt could not decide whether he could cross it. Looking around, he saw a cow grazing nearby. He asked, "Uncle Cow, could you tell me if I can cross the river?" the cow told him that he could and that the river was not very deep, just to his knees.

          The colt was crossing the river when a squirrel jumped down a tree and stopped him. The squirrel shouted, "Colt, stop! Youll be drowned! One of my friends was drowned yesterday just in the river." Not knowing what to do, the colt went home to consult his mom.

          He told his mom his experience on the way. His mother said, "My child, dont always listen to others. Youd better go and try yourself. Then youll know what to do."

          Just at the river, the squirrel stopped the colt again. "Little horse, its too dangerous!" "No, I want to have a try by myself", answered the colt. Then he crossed the river carefully. On the other side of the river, the colt realized that the river was neither as shallow as the cow said nor as as deep as the squirrel told him.

          The fable tells us a truth: real knowledge comes from practices.

          一天,老馬讓小馬馱著半口袋麥子到磨坊去磨面。

          小馬把路上的經(jīng)歷告訴了媽媽。媽媽說(shuō):“孩子,光聽(tīng)別人說(shuō)是不行的,你自己親自去試一試,就知道答案了。”

          小馬回到河邊,剛要下水,松鼠又大叫起來(lái):“小馬,你不要命啦?”小馬說(shuō):“讓我試試吧!彼幻婊卮鹨幻嫦铝撕樱⌒牡靥肆诉^(guò)去。原來(lái)河水既不像老牛說(shuō)的那樣淺也不像松鼠說(shuō)的那樣深。

          這則寓言告訴我們:實(shí)踐出真知。
